1.0 out of 5 stars A good idea killed by a useless battery and nonexistent tech support, July 5, 2009

Learn from my mistake and avoid purchasing any iRex product.

I purchased an iRex iLiad three years ago. At first, it was everything that I'd been looking for, but then overnight it began freezing up and requiring use of the emergency reset button on the back (which also occasionally didn't function).

And then, after <100 uses, the battery stopped taking a charge.

Tech support? Nonexistent! No responses to voice mail left at iRex's California number. Impossible to open an online tech support account, and iRex refuses tech support email unless you submit to a ridiculously cumbersome registration process (which, based on 6 unsuccessful attempts to register, doesn't work). Responses to 3 emails to their corporate offices? None.

I now have a "portable" book reader that works only when plugged into an AC socket. Portable, NOT!

My only small consolation is an admittedly negative one: we advise 3000+ field operatives on tech issues, and iRex has likely lost dozens of US and Canadian sales. After 3 months of trying to get an acceptable response - in fact, ANY response - I think that I can objectively recommend against purchase of iRex products.

POST 2:

The screen has amazingly high contrast and, while it's slightly grainy, it makes even small text supremely easy to read. There's no glare, as there isn't a backlight, which contributes to the long battery life. The iLiad's large screen is great for sketching on or taking notes using the stylus

The iLiad Reader is fairly intuitive to use. You can leaf through pages using a pivoting sidebar, and use the included stylus to zoom into text, add annotations, and scribble notes and diagrams.

Love the flip bar for turning the page and the touch-sensitive screen with stylus. Recreates the feel of a book surprisingly well

Plus it  has great features, smooth interface and an open source format; there's a lot to love.
