5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a reader which allows you to carry many books!, November 13, 2007

I love to read and I have a bad back; while I will look forward to being able to use the Iliad for other uses, ultimately I wanted a reader that could carry many books without all the tiny cards needed by most of them when they exceed storage capacity after loading one book. After enormous frustration spent trying to learn to use one of the iPaqs (loaded with stuff I had on my palm and therefore without much space for downloads)which called itself an "entertainment" device but had mostly business applications, I finally broke down and decided to buy the Iliad.
Not only did it arrive in a timely manner, it arrived loaded with Mobipocket, so I was in seventh heaven as most good books do use that format.

I have an average of twelve to eighteen books on my Iliad at any one time; I can fit this in my purse (about the size of a trade paperback and slightly less weight. I think it is genius. While I look forward to the promised new uses, I bought this first and foremost to read books for business and pleasure. There is not, to my knowledge, another better product out there for this purpose.

I would have liked a back light as I sometimes travel when I have a room mate who would like to sleep when I want to read; but I think that if it is a choice between battery capacity and a back light, I'll use a book lite of some sort when that is needed.

Perhaps iRex will come out with a nice book light add on that fits all of the cases specifically made for the iLiad? iRex, that *would* be nice!

I love this thing!

Finally somebody has figured out how to provide an electronic device that allows you to eliminate paper. I am a consultant in the software industry, and use it for reading technical manuals (PDFs). I have also used it to read some paperback novels I downloaded, and that also works great.

This device is very flexible in the type of material (pdf, text file, ebooks, etc), so unlike other readers, you are not locked into a proprietary format.

It's also a little bit bigger than other readers. If you only read electronic versions of paperbacks, the smaller size of other readers might be appealing. However, the iRex is an excellent format for reading larger format material (i.e. PDFs).

The electronic ink is just plain cool. I've had the iRex for about a year and am still amazed by the clarity of the print...maybe I'm just getting old, but I'm pretty sure it is magic!

If you are looking for an electronic book, buy this one.

The irex iliad is just what I need. I can carry sooo many books and is open source so you can create applications for it and the are many people who have created some very good applications such as an internet browser and a way to download books without connecting the iLiad to your computer. All in all I love it and could not live without it!
